The story behind
A Practical Response to an Everyday Problem

MalinaPatrol began in North Tyneside with a simple observation: dog-waste bags are not always available when they are needed.

Founded by a 13-year-old dog owner as part of the volunteering section of his Duke of Edinburgh's Award, the project was named after Malina, the family dog who inspired the idea.

Getting started
Testing the Idea

The first dispensers were printed at home using an existing 3D-printable design and installed along local walking routes. This gave us a practical way to see how people used them, how often they needed refilling and what could be improved.

What we learned from those first stations shaped the development of our own MalinaPatrol dispenser.

Developing MalinaPatrol

We then designed our own 3D-printed dispenser, with raised MalinaPatrol branding, practical information and a QR-code panel produced directly as part of the print.

Each QR code opens the station’s digital card, where visitors can view location information and report an empty or damaged dispenser. Refill records and additional station-management tools are now being developed to help the network operate reliably as it grows.

Designed to Grow

MalinaPatrol is being developed for use across more parks, walking routes and public spaces, with opportunities for businesses, councils and organisations to support individual locations and the wider network.

MalinaPatrol’s purpose is clear: to make responsible dog walking easier and contribute to cleaner shared spaces.
